The Sample Maker.
Record a sound, build one from nothing, or open a file. Shape it, save it, and play it on sixteen pads. All of it happens on this device.
Sound starts when you tap. On an iPhone it plays even with the silent switch on. Drop a file on this box any time to open it.
1 · MAKE A SOUND seven ways in
A beat built from the drums here, so it is yours to use. It loops with no gap: whatever rings past the end goes back to the start.
Up to 30 seconds. The silence at each end is cut and the level set for you. The phone's call filters are switched off, so a clap stays a clap. Nothing is uploaded.
Any audio file this browser can play, up to ten minutes. Longer than 30 seconds? A box appears on the wave: slide it over the part you want and press TRIM TO BOX.
Five colours of noise: risers, sweeps, wind, tape hiss. White is every frequency at once; each colour after it leans lower or higher.
The Broke DJ studio's sound bank: drums, percussion, hits, the city, nature. They are synthesized on this device, so an animal is an impression of one, not a recording.
2 · SHAPE IT
These are filters, not AI. They cut the sound by how high or low it is, or by where it sits between the speakers. A voice and a snare share the middle band, so nothing here can lift one instrument out of a finished song.
3 · KEEP IT
4 · PLAY IT keys 1 to 4, Q to R, A to F, Z to V
5 · YOUR LIBRARY
Saved in this browser only, never uploaded. Clearing site data erases it, and Safari can clear it after seven days without a visit: download what you want to keep.
WHAT YOU CAN USE
Everything made from scratch here (drums, synths, loops, noise, the studio sounds) is yours: use it in anything, sell what you make with it, no credit needed. A recording of your own voice or your own instrument is yours too.
A piece of somebody else's record is not. Sampling a song you did not make needs permission from whoever owns it, usually both the label and the writers, before it goes into anything you release. This page can cut it; it cannot clear it.
WHERE IT IS KEPT
On this device, in this browser's own storage (IndexedDB), and nowhere else: there is no account and no upload. The microphone is open only while RECORD is lit. What is kept is listed on the privacy page.
THE NUMBERS IT SHOWS
A loop's tempo and a synth's key are known, because this page made them. For a recording or a file, the tempo and key are a reading of the audio and are labelled "about" and "sounds like": a reading can be wrong, and drums and noise have no key to read.
PADS AND KEYS
Sixteen pads, played by tapping, by the keys 1 to 4, Q to R, A to F and Z to V, or by a pad controller over Web MIDI (Chrome and Edge on a computer, Chrome on Android; Safari has no Web MIDI). Notes 36 to 51, where most drum pads start, play pads 1 to 16, and how hard you hit is how loud it plays. Space plays the editor, and Ctrl or Cmd Z undoes.
